I’d say that so far, 2019 is the year of Chia Seed Jam. (For me at least!) I’ve made a batch a week since the beginning of the year and the family just can’t get enough of it! 

 

So far I’ve shared strawberry and raspberry chia jam recipes and today I’m sharing a chia seed jam recipe using frozen instead of fresh fruit. So, you can enjoy homemade sugar free jam no matter the fruit season. 

How To Make Chia Seed Jam 

Frozen fruit for chia seed jam

Making chia seed jam is easy. You simply need to slowly soften the frozen fruit. This will take longer than using fresh fruit – especially if your freezer is like mine and freezes produce extra frozen/hard! 

You don’t need to add any water or other liquid to help is soften. Just be patient and very quickly some of the fruit will start releasing liquid and becoming mashable. 

Cooking chia seed jam

The bag of frozen fruit I used included redcurrants, blackcurrents, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. So, the smaller fruit dissolved into a jammy liquid a lot quicker than the larger raspberries. 

Just keep a close watch and once all the fruit is softened you can take it off the heat. I like to use a potato masher to mash the berries into a softened jam.

You may prefer to allow it to cool and then blend in a food processor or blender and then strain through a sieve for an extra smooth, fine jam.

We prefer our a little more chunky and with small pieces of fruit. Once the fruit is mashed to your liking, you then stir through stevia (or your sugar/sweetener of choice) and chia seeds. 

Once you’ve added the stevia, taste to be sure it’s sweet enough to your liking. Then, allow to cool to room temperature before pouring the chia jam into a jar. (Or jars.)

Store in the fridge, allow to further thicken for a few hours and then you can enjoy your chia jam on pancakes, waffles, toast or mixed through yoghurt.

  • 500g/1.1lbs Frozen Fruit
  • 1/4 to 1/2 Cup Stevia
  • 1/4 Cup Chia Seeds
  1. Place the frozen fruit into a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Heat slowly and stir regularly to help the fruit to soften. 
  3. Cook until bubbling and all of the fruit is easily mashable. 
  4. Remove from the heat and either mash with a potato masher or allow to cool and puree in a blender or food processor until smooth to your liking. 
  5. Mix through the stevia, taste that it’s sweet enough and add more stevia until sweet to your liking. 
  6. Stir through the chia seeds, ensuring they are fully incorporated. 
  7. Allow to cool to room temperature and then pour into a jar. 
  8. Move the chia seed jam to the fridge, store for up to a week and enjoy.
