For Mr 3’s birthday a month ago, I asked him if he’d like to go out for a milkshake as a treat. His reply – “Yes! I want a Pink Milkshake!” So, on his birthday we treated him to one. We ventured to a cafe for brunch and he proudly ordered his “pink milkshake”. He waited very patiently for the milkshake and was a picture of joy and excitement the moment our waiter placed a tall, old fashioned milkshake directly in front him.
Inspired by his love of “pink milkshakes”, I decided to concoct one for him at home. What I ended up making is really known as a Strawberry Smoothie to you and me. When it comes to 3 year olds though – marketing is key!
The first time I made it for him, I had the usual mini-stress about whether he would even drink any of it! I did what sometimes worked and got him involved. He helped me chop up the strawberries (with a blunt knife of course!), measure out the ingredients and pour them into the blender.
Having a hand in his “milkshake” really helped because he slurped his way through a whole cup – and asked for more! I’ve been making them every other day or so for the past month, with very little deviation from the below recipe. When you’re onto something your fuss-pot will devour, and which is actually good for them, it’s not worth tinkering too much for fear that it will be rejected – becoming a “No” food.
Feel free to get creative with this recipe yourself though, experiment with a wider variety of fruit or yoghurt. You could also add more milk for more of a milkshake consistency if you’d prefer.
I’ve used some frozen raspberries in the recipe to give the smoothie an instantly freezing sensation.
Strawberry Smoothie
½ punnet (125g) strawberries – chopped
½ cup frozen raspberries
½ cup strawberry yoghurt
1 cup milk
1 tsp honey
1. Throw everything into the blender, drizzling the honey over the smoothie just before to blending it all together
2. Blend for 30 seconds, turn the blender off, open the lid and stir everything around with a spoon.
3. Pop the blender back on and blend for a further 30 seconds
4. Pour into cups & enjoy!
This recipe makes 2 generous cups.
