This year has seen a MASSIVE shift in the way I think about food, prepare food and enjoy food. There are so many books which inspired me through the year on my journey that I thought I’d share with you the 10 books (incluing eBooks) that influenced me most in 2012. (note, that most of the books weren’t actually published in 2012, but they inspired me on my journey this year so deserve recognition.)
I hope this list will inspire you on your journey and maybe give you an idea or two for a gift to give to a lucky family member.
10 Of My Best Books Of 2012:
1. Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats By Sally Fallon & Mary Enig – some of you may have had this book for years, well I just discovered it this year and it sent me on a path towards seeing food preparation from a whole new perspective. Bringing the brilliant work of Weston A Price to a new generation, Nourishing Traditionss shares everything from the importance of soaking grains and nuts to preparing sauerkraut, there was something new to be learnt on every page which I know I’ll be referring back to for many, many years to come.
2. Eat Fat, Lose Fat: The Healthy Alternative to Trans Fats By Sally Fallon & Mary Enig – explores how consuming nourishing fats, like coconut oil, can help overcome weight struggles and forge a healthier life. The book is packed full of enlightening research which challenges conventional diet dogma and has really helped me understand how “low fat” diets do more long term harm than good. There are 3 detailed eating plans to help you achieve your nutrition goals, whether they are to lose weight or heal a lingering illness.
3. Frugavore: How to Grow Organic, Buy Local, Waste Nothing, and Eat Well By Arabella Forge – this book furthered what I’d learnt in Nourishing Traditions, by teaching me how to follow more of an organic liftstyle without spending a fortune. In addition to helping me learn how to source quality ingredients, locally, there are heaps of yummy recipes too.
4. French Kids Eat Everything: How Our Family Moved to France, Cured Picky Eating, Banned Snacking, and Discovered 10 Simple Rules for Raising Happy, Healthy Eaters By Karen Le Billon – you may notice how well read the book is in the above photo, well that’s because it’s a book I have read and re-read in 2012 and drawn immense inspiration from. The book helped me stop my kids constant snacking and helped me implement a number of strategies which resulted in my fussy eater trying more and more foods.
5. Gut and Psychology Syndrome: Natural Treatment for Autism, Dyspraxia, A.D.D., Dyslexia, A.D.H.D., Depression, Schizophrenia By Natasha Campbell-McBride – an in depth exploration into all the finer details of what the GAPS Diet is, how to follow it and the benefits that can be experienced. This book will enlighten and educate and is essential reading for anyone contemplating The GAPS Diet, although the book is also a phenomenal resource for those interested in nutrition in general.
6. 30 Days On GAPS Intro Handbook By Cara from Health, Home and Happiness – an invaluable resource packed full of recipes and step by step guidelines for following the first 30 days of the GAPS diet. In the lead-up to our GAPS journey, I’m reading through the eBook on a daily basis, to make sure I’m ordering what’s needed to be ordered and cooking what I need to cook to have a fridge/freezer/pantry full of GAPS foods from day 1.
7. Nigella Kitchen: Recipes from the Heart of the Home By Nigella Lawson – Nigella Kitchen is just packed full of recipes which are easily adaptable to my new way of cooking because her food is full of honest, hearty ingredients which truly nourish. I’ve mentioned many a times on this site of my adoration for Nigella, so this list wouldn’t be complete without a book of hers. Doesn’t hurt that I cook from this book on a regular basis too – so that makes it even more worthy of a spot on my top 10 books for the 2012!
8. Apples for Jam: A Colorful Cookbook By Tessa Kiros – this book has been a favorite of mine for many years, yet I still find new recipes every time I page through this incredible book. This book contains a vast collection of recipes that the whole family adores. In fact it was the croquettes in this book that was the ONLY form of red meat that Mr 4 would eat for about a year, so really this book helped keep him nourished before he started to try new foods.
9. I Quit Sugar eBook By Sarah Wilson – a must have if you’re a sugar addict (like I have been for most of my life…) it gives you a step by step plan to get rid of your sugar habit and cravings. I revisit the eBook in times of sugar struggle and when I am in need of a little inspiration and guidance.
10. I Quit Sugar Cookbook By Sarah Wilson- this cookbook has provided so much inspiration for a number of the delectable dishes I enjoyed through the year, that I just had to highlight the cookbook in addition to the above eBook. As well as recipes from Sarah, there are also delicious contributions from Sally Fallon and Mark Sisson (and Gwyneth Paltrow too!).
So there they are. 10 Of My Best Books Of 2012. Books which inspired me and made an immense difference (for the better) to the lives of me and my family.
