We’ve been on The GAPS Diet for almost 2 months already and have completely transitioned into a Grain Free way of life. The kids have adapted really well to our new eating habits and I’m enormously proud of them.
Being Grain Free (and steering completely away from processed food of any kind) has meant being organized and well prepared with food for the kids for excursions away from the convenience of GAPS Friendly food in easy reach at home.Depending on the time of day, one of my strategies is to feed the kids just before going out. That way they have full stomachs and (hopefully) won’t be hungry while we are out and about.
However, I also usually take mini lunch boxes out with us,. That way, there’s no temptation to stray and buy food which we aren’t ready for.
Some of our favorite Grain Free, GAPS Diet Snacks Include:
- Homemade Pancakes
- Veggie Scrambled Eggs
- Nuts
- Fruit Pieces
- Veggie Sticks
- Dried Fruit
- Frozen Peas – which also happens to be useful for keeping the snack box contents cool
I tend to balance their snacks depending on what they ate at their previous meal. In fact their previous meal leftovers often find their way into their snack box so that no food is wasted.
Here are 2 recent snack boxes…
This snack box has carrot sticks, zucchini omelette, frozen peas and almonds. In this instance I made 2 little boxes – one for each child.
This snack box has homemade pumpkin cookies, carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, cherries and blueberries. In this instance there was one bigger snack box to share between the kids…. and I may have snuck some berries too!
These snack boxes keep the kids nourished between mealtimes, keeping them full of energy for the park, shopping or wherever our outing may take us.
I’ve been referring to Cara from Health, Home and Happiness’ 30 Days On GAPS Intro Handbook – constantly (Download It Now), it’s invaluable for making sure you’re staying on track and keeps you organized and inspired with meal and snack ideas. I highly recommend the book if you’re thinking about going onto the GAPS Diet, or are about the start the GAPS Diet – purchasing the book will be a lifesaver for you! (Download It Now)
