How The GAPS Diet Healed My Son’s Eczema

How The GAPS Diet Healed My Son's Eczema

Over 18 months ago we began our GAPS Diet Journey – which we embarked on in an attempt to heal my youngest son’s chronic eczema.

The GAPS Diet was a lot of hard work – from the prep to the cooking to the actual task of getting the kids to ACTUALLY EAT THE FOOD! The results though speak for themselves.

I seriously wouldn’t have been as successful at the planning and preparation side if it hadn’t been for What Can I Eat Now? 30 Days on the GAPS Intro Diet. I know I’ve mentioned this resource in the past and it’s for good reason – it’s like having someone holding your hand through the greatest culinary challenge you could ever imagine – cooking meals void of ingredients you’re used to while dealing with a family going through serious sugar and grain withdrawals. (Click here to learn more.)

We spent a good few months working our way through the GAPS Intro Diet, the full GAPS Diet before slowly (and successfully) reintroducing Non-GAPS Food.

During The GAPS Diet

We went through a series of Die-Offs – where his eczema got better for a time, then worse then better again.

At it’s worst the poor darling looked like a serious burn victim. (I can’t bear to look at photos of him from that time – it just breaks my heart.) At it’s best the eczema looked like mild sunburn. We continued through the stages re-introducing new foods along the way.

After The GAPS Diet

Once we had moved onto re-introducing grains and other ingredients, from time to time he had a reaction and his skin would break out. We then re-adjusted his diet, looked for the culprit ingredient to eliminate and attempt to re-introduce at a later date.

Dairy took multiple introductions over the course of a couple of months before he could successfully consume a portion without suffering from an eczema breakout.

18 Months Later…

Right now his skin looks the best it’s ever looked – as you’ll see in the picture above. I attribute that to the healing he achieved on The GAPS Diet.

We now eat a predominantly whole foods diet, void of processed ingredients and as many potential eczema triggers as possible. He’s a happy, healthy soon to be 4 year old and I am so thankful for our GAPS Diet Journey.

Over to you – please share your GAPS Diet experience in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
