Healthy Alternatives To Fast Food
Lets be honest, there are days when despite our best efforts we just don’t have the time/inclination/energy to cook a meal from scratch. It’s incredibly tempting in those instances to just order take away to feed the family quickly and effortlessly.
In anticipation of such instances, I keep my fridge and pantry stocked with items that can become a real food meal in less time than it takes to call for take away, pick it up and bring it back home.
Here’s what I ALWAYS have on hand:
- A pack of smoked salmon with a long expiry date (be aware of the date and make sure you eat it in time!)
- A pack of natural smoked sausages with a long expiry date (be aware of the date and make sure you eat it in time!)
- Organic Udon noodles
- Tinned Tuna (pole and line caught)
- Tinned Beans
- Tinned Tomatoes
- Dairy galore – cheese, milk, yoghurt
- Coconut Milk
- Bread/Wraps
- Eggs
In addition to my must haves, I always have vegetables on hand to incorporate into my meals. Depending on just how much time/energy I have, I’ll either just open a package of salmon or smoked sausages as the protein portion and make a piece of toast to go along or wrap the protein up inside a tortilla.
Another option is to cook the noodles and make a noodle salad with the tuna and beans.
Of course there’s always the option of having a giant tuna salad, using the tuna and beans and whatever vegetables you have on hand.
Don’t forget eggs! I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve quickly fried up a pan full of eggs for the family or made french toast of some description.
While on the subject of a breakfast dish, there’s nothing stopping you enjoying your favourite breakfast dish for dinner.
All of these options are WAY quicker than the take away option and keep me in control of the food my family is eating, ensuring it’s as natural and nourishing as possible.
I’d really love to hear your go to healthy alternatives to fast food. Please share in the comments!
