A Week Of Dinner Ideas For Kids
Do you get struck with 5pm panic when you realize that dinner is mere hours away and you have NO IDEA WHAT TO COOK?!?! Despite my best efforts and being a food blogger who enjoys all things to do with cooking, that panic hits me regularly when I simply draw a blank when it comes to dinner ideas for kids.
To help us all, I decided to document a week of my kid’s dinners so that when we get struck by 5pm panic we can have a resource of quick meal ideas that are all super kid friendly and most can be prepared with little to no effort.
Monday – French Toast with Avocado
We try and follow Meat Free Mondays in our house. We’re a meat/chicken loving family but I do try and balance it out through the week, starting with a meat free meal on Monday.
I went for an easy option with French Toast topped with avocado. I whisked 4 eggs together and dipped 2 pieces of bread into the batter and fried that up until cooked through. Giving each of my kids 2 eggs in their French Toast. The French Toast was topped with mashed avocado, bringing more healthy fats and some green to their dinner plates.
In the past I’ve also topped the French Toast with a fried egg, in which case I mix 1 egg per bread instead of 2 into the batter. The boys love the combo of fried egg and French toast!
Tuesday – Smoked Salmon on a Bagel
Another easy option – bagels for dinner! We LOVE bagels from our local bakery and enjoy them sandwiched with Smoked Salmon. The boys like them without any spread, for the adults I included a schmear of cream cheese and a drizzle of lemon juice.
For a veggie side, I kept it (surprise, surprise) simple with a couple of mini tomatoes, still on the vine. The kids just love picking them off the vine!
Wednesday – Homemade Burgers
I had planned to make spaghetti and meatballs but my day ended up being a little crazier than normal and I just knew on my way home that I wouldn’t have time to make spaghetti and meatballs. So, I stopped in at the supermarket quickly for some rolls and used the mince to make homemade burgers instead.
The kids always LOVE my homemade burgers. My youngest even commenting “these are REAL burgers”! (As opposed to ones we have at restaurants which are not as good, according to my wise 5 year old!)
To make my burgers I simply mix 500g of beef mince with a generous amount of ground coriander, a pinch of salt, an egg and a tablespoon or so of flour. I mix it all together and form 4 patties – one for each of us. The patties are then fried until cooked through.
Thursday – Sausage and Potato Bake
Once a week a sausage meal of some description usually features on our menu. This week it was a sausage and potato bake. The boys love the crispy potatoes and how the sausages taste “different” than when fried. Click here for the recipe!
Friday – Chicken Nuggets and Garlic Mashed Potatoes
I follow the recipe from the Nom Nom Paleo book for chicken nuggets and they are just so perfect, crispy and crunchy that I never adapt or try any other chicken nugget recipes. We all enjoy them and the kids always eat every single bite!
I served them with a side of broccoli and tomato sauce for dipping.
Saturday – Banana Pancakes
It was a rocking Saturday night at our house and we celebrated with banana pancakes! A fun Saturday dinner which is more like a sweet treat than anything else. I made 2 Ingredient Banana Pancakes, which are just sooooo easy! Get the recipe here.
Sunday – Roast Chicken and Potatoes
As the whole family’s favourite piece of chicken is the leg/drumstick, I usually roast a whole chicken plus a pack of drumsticks so that we all can have at least one with our meal.
I tend to prepare a roast chicken most Sundays and then the leftovers go into lunches for the first couple of days of the week.
