Do you have any annual birthday traditions? My kids have their birthdays about a month apart from each other. So, June and July is affectionately known as “birthday season” around our household. (My birthday happens to be early August, but I don’t include myself in these celebrations!)
One of our annual traditions is that we wait for the annual June/July toy sales to begin and then we shop for presents! The boys pick their “main” present and then I sneak in a surprise gift or two as well. Here’s a video of our recent city adventure where we shopped for birthday presents for the boys:
Our other tradition is to enjoy a chocolate cake with chocolate icing and natural sprinkles as a birthday cake. My cake decorating skills are rubbish… ok, they’re worse than rubbish but I don’t swear on my blog, so we’ll leave it at that!
I’ve managed to get away with a chocolate cake, smothered in chocolate icing and the kids then “decorate it” by sprinkling an endless amount of colourful sprinkles over the still wet icing. (Naturally coloured sprinkles, which as you can see aren’t as bright as their artificial cousins, but are sweet and tasty too!)
The cake is always a huge hit with the kids and rest of the family, so I make it time and time again. Thankfully they haven’t asked me to change the tradition to something tricky like a minecraft or lego cake (their two obsessions) and so I make this easy chocolate birthday cake over and over again through our “birthday season”. Enjoy!
While filming the video for this recipe I had a nasty cold and sounded awful, so decided to put music over the instructions. So, please enjoy watching the construction of the easy chocolate cake and then print the full recipe out below to make it yourself.

For the two ingredient chocolate glaze, simply melt together 100g/3.5 ounces each of chocolate (I used a block of organic dark chocolate) and unsalted butter and then pour and spread it over the cake. While the glaze is still warm and moist, sprinkle over coloured sprinkles or other topping of choice.
