Split Pea Soup
Today is the first day of Winter, here in Australia, so I’m sharing my favourite, warming Winter soup recipe – Split Pea Soup.
This Split Pea Soup Recipe takes me back 15 or so years to the first time I visited Amsterdam. This was in my single, pre-kids, pre-Hubby days where I travelled the world on my own. One of my absolute, all time favourite destinations was (and is) Amsterdam. I adore wandering along the canals, stopping in at random restaurants to sample Dutch cuisine and just experiencing all the picturesque city has to offer.
My first taste of Dutch Pea Soup had me hooked. It was Mid-Winter during my first Amsterdam visit. I’d been exploring the city and was eager for a warm bowl of famed Dutch Pea Soup. The thick, rich soup was the perfect dish to warm me up and give me the nourishment I needed to keep exploring the fascinating city.
Now I’m not saying this Split Pea soup is anything like authentic Dutch Pea Soup, it’s my version of the memory and a bowlful always elicits a feeling of warmth and happy memories.
As I’m not a Ham eater, I use a couple of Lamb Shanks to give the pea soup a rich, meaty flavour. It works wonderfully well. The meat becomes meltingly soft, while bringing delicious flavour and nutrients to the soup.
