Oatmeal Crumble Topping Recipe – how to make the best easy baked apple, pear or fruit crisp recipe with a crunchy oat crumb.
Oatmeal Crumble Topping Recipe
This oatmeal crumble topping recipe is the best way of making a crunchy topping to go over your crisp or crumble filling of choice.
I adore the contrast of the crunchy texture of the crisp topping together with the soft baked fruit beneath.
My favorite way to finish off the dessert is when the warm crumble is topped with a chilled scoop of ice cream – altogether creating the perfect, comforting dessert.
Oat Crumble Ingredients
Here are the ingredients you need to make the crumb topping:
Butter – unsalted butter is used in the recipe and it can be cold butter straight from the fridge, no need to have it at room temperature as it’s melted then mixed with the other ingredients to help create the oat crumb mixture.
Oats – I’ve made this recipe with all kinds of different oats – rolled, porridge and really anything I can find at the grocery store. The coarser the oats, the more crunchy and coarse your topping will be, so it depends on what you have in your kitchen and your own personal preference.
Ground Cinnamon – is my spice of choice, but you can swap for a half a teaspoon of nutmeg or vanilla extract instead.
Brown Sugar – you can use light brown sugar, coconut sugar or any other caramel colored sugar you’d like.
Maple Syrup – you can swap the maple syrup for honey or golden syrup.
Traditionally a crumble tends to have apples as the filling, you can use granny smith apples, tart apples or really any firm apples you like in the apple filling of an apple crumble.
You can of course swap the apples or include a mix of frozen or fresh fruit of your choice, including pears, peaches, strawberries or blueberries to create a blueberry crumble.
Or, you could even infuse orange zest and orange juice into the crumble to make a fruit variety crumble.
The dessert is like an oatmeal streusel topping, so if you’re a streusel fan then you’ll absolutely love this simple sweet treat.
