These foods to prevent motion sickness are my tried and tested remedies to help prevent the feeling queasy from the motion of a car, bus, plane or boat. 

I’ve suffered from the symptoms of motion sickness all my life, and am always on the hunt for foods and hacks to make travel more tolerable for me. 

You may prefer to travel on an empty stomach and avoid food altogether, different solutions work for different people, so you’ll need to find out what works for you.

So, aside from the food suggestions, other remedies to avoid the side effects of motion while travelling are to sit in the front seat to avoid car sickness so that you’re able to keep your eyes forward and on the road, head to the middle of the ship or get out for fresh air and keep your eyes on the horizon to help keep you centred when travelling by ship or boat. 

Depending on the severity of your sickness, you may with to see your Doctor before travel to request prescription medications, or seek over the counter pharmacy motion sickness medication or non-drowsy antihistamines to help you medically prevent motion sickness in addition to keeping the following foods to hand.

Before getting to the foods to help you, the following foods may worsen or even trigger motion sickness, so be mindful to avoid these before travel. (As mentioned above, everyone is different, these may not affect you.)

You’ll find that overall the best foods to prevent motion sickness include bland foods and I find that eating small, light meals while on the move helps to keep sickness at bay. 

Ginger

The first food that can help avoid the symptoms of travel sickness is ginger. You may wish to slowly sip ginger ale or ginger tea or snack on ginger candies or ginger biscuits. 

I always keep a packet of ginger biscuits in my handbag so that whichever form of transport I’m on, if I start to experience the slightest feelings of nausea I can quickly feel better with the help of a biscuit or two.

As with ginger biscuits, bland foods like dry crackers can help very quickly help to prevent motion sickness symptoms on a moving vehicle on a road trip, long flight or to avoid sea sickness. 

Fruit and Vegetables

For me, fresh fruit and vegetables can help me feel refreshed and eliminate any feeling of nausea very quickly, while also providing light snacks for the journey. 

My go to, easily transportable high-in-starch fruit and vegetables are: 

  • Bananas
  • Green apples
  • Grapes
  • Cucumber

Yogurt

Just before leaving for my recent ferry trip, I visited a local supermarket to pick up yogurts to start our long journey with.

You may prefer to avoid dairy, but I found the lemon yogurt to be a refreshing snack to keep me nourished with the health benefits that come from enjoying small portions of yogurt. 

Drinks

Peppermint tea

Cold drinks such as fizzy drinks, lemon water or warm drinks like herbal tea such as peppermint tea can be slowly sipped as a traditional remedy to avoid a dry mouth and keeping a queasy stomach at bay. 

Also be sure to drink plenty of water to as the best way to keep hydrated on your travels.
