Keto Breakfast Smoothie Recipe – Quick & Easy Low Carb High Protein Shake for weight loss – Best simple dairy free strawberry smoothie with almond & coconut milk plus the video tutorial.
Keto Breakfast Smoothie
This Keto Breakfast Smoothie is the perfect whole meal – it includes deliciously balanced macros for the low carb high fat Ketogenic Diet and tastes berrylicious! (Plus it’s high in essential protein too.)
I like taking a dairy break every couple of meals on the keto diet, so like to have a dairy free keto smoothie for breakfast to turn to in these instances.
And, this quick breakfast smoothie is full of my go to low carb dairy free alternatives – almond milk, canned coconut milk and coconut yoghurt.
I use my Nutribullet to mix together all the best keto smoothie recipes. It’s really handy to have a high-speed blender in the kitchen and I have made all sorts of smoothies and shakes in it. (Where to find a nutribullet.)
Low Carb Smoothie Ingredients
There’s heaps of keto smoothie ingredients to choose from that you can mix and match to create a delicious smoothie. Here are my choice of delicious ingredients for this keto breakfast shake:
Berries – You can add as little or as much berries as you like, depends on how many carbs you’d like to allocate to your smoothie.
To keep the smoothie low in grams of net carbs include a small handful for the berry flavor without elevating the carb content of the healthy breakfast, as you would with a traditional smoothie with unlimited organic strawberries.
The recipe suggests strawberries, but you could swap in other low carb berries such as raspberries, blueberries or blackberries instead.
Almond Milk & Coconut Milk – Full cream, whole or regular milk tends to be too high in carbs to fit into most people’s daily carb count on a low-carb diet.
So, it’s best to opt to a non-dairy milk alternative which is naturally lower in carbs and the perfect keto friendly smoothies option.
I tend to go for an unsweetened almond milk and coconut milk, which works wonderfully well in low carb smoothies.
Just take a look around the non dairy milk section of your supermarket and read the nutrition label carefully as sugars often creep in when not needed.
To make a smoothie with the perfect creamy texture, you could also add in or swap some of the milks for heavy cream or coconut cream.
Yogurt – unsweetened plain, natural or Greek yogurt tend to be great options of yogurt that has the lowest grams of carbs, which are perfect for the keto lifestyle.
In this instance I went for an unsweetened plain coconut yogurt which was sufficiently low in carbs.
Stevia – My go to sweetener of choice is stevia, but you can also feel free to use a low carb sweetener of choice, such as monk fruit sweetener, to sweeten your smoothies instead, without any added sugar.
Your smoothie may be sweet enough from the fruit and other ingredients. So, when adding sweetener, taste the smoothie first and then add a small amount at a time until the smoothie is sweet enough to your liking.
Protein Powder – The scoop of protein powder is a great way to make the smoothie into a meal thanks to the healthy combination of protein, healthy fats and carbs.
You can use a dairy free protein powder, collagen protein powder or a whey protein powder in keto recipes. (Where to find keto friendly protein powder.)
Feel free to be inspired by the recipe and mix and match the low carb diet ingredients based on your own tastes and dietary requirements.
You could even mix in some chia seeds, lemon zest or lemon juice for added grams of fiber, MCT Oil, Coconut Oil or almond butter for added fat or even cocoa powder for a chocolate smoothie.
