Mascarpone Chocolate Frosting Recipe - How to make easy 4 ingredient creamy icing

Mascarpone Chocolate Frosting

This mascarpone chocolate frosting tastes like a light yet decadent icing, rich in chocolate and luxuriously creamy.

You’ll find that adding mascarpone into a frosting or icing makes it fluffy and light without overpowering the treat with tangy flavor, as a cream cheese frosting does.

The frosting can be used to frost a vanilla, chocolate or even strawberry cake, cupcakes, brownies or to sandwich a couple of cookies together.

Mascarpone Frosting Ingredients

Freshly whipped frosting

Here are the four ingredients that you’ll need to prepare this fluffy mascarpone whipped frosting.

Mascarpone Cheese – rich and creamy mascarpone adds an indulgent element to this easy frosting. (Here are some ideas for what to do with leftover mascarpone.)

Cream – you can use heavy cream, whipping cream, double cream or even a pouring cream, just be sure that you can whip it into creamy whipped cream.

Whisking ingredients together

Cocoa Powder – you can use unsweetened cocoa powder, Dutch cocoa powder or even cacao powder in this recipe.

Sugar – ideally use powdered sugar for super fine and perfectly set frosting. If you’d like to swap out the powdered sugar, you can go for regular sugar, stevia for a sugar free alternative or even honey or maple syrup instead.

Optional Extra Ingredients

Here are some ideas for optional extra ingredients and flavors that go well with this chocolate frosting with mascarpone cheese.

Cream Cheese – you can substitute or add cream cheese into the frosting, although it will change the flavor or it, making it more of a cream cheese icing that one with mascarpone.

Coffee – add in 1 to teaspoons or coffee or even espresso powder for mocha flavored frosting.

Vanilla or Salt – to boost the overall flavor of the icing, you could add half a teaspoon to a teaspoon of vanilla or a pinch of salt.

Peppermint Extract – for a mint flavored frosting, add in a 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon of peppermint extract.

Lemon, Lime or Orange – zest or juice can add a citrus element to the frosting.

Strawberries – fold finely chopped strawberries through for a strawberry infused chocolate frosting.

Milk – if you find the frosting is too thick for your liking and you want to loosen it up a little, simply add in milk, a tablespoon at a time until it’s perfectly creamy.

How To Make Fluffy Mascarpone Frosting

Making creamy mascarpone frosting

Making this fudgy chocolate mascarpone frosting is super simple, start by pouring the cream into a large bowl.

Whip the cream until it’s just starting to form whipped cream, you don’t want to over whip it, as you’ll be whipping in the other ingredients as you work through the recipe.

Add the mascarpone cheese and whisk until luxurious and creamy.

Next, add in the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, ideally over a sieve to avoid lumps and create a super smooth and creamy frosting.

Adding cocoa powder into chocolate mascarpone frosting

I find that the ratio of cocoa powder to sugar results in perfectly balanced, not overly sweet frosting. Feel free to adjust to make the frosting sweeter or richer in chocolate by adding in (or taking out) a tablespoon of the cocoa powder/sugar, depending on your tastes.

Give the frosting a final whisk until the cocoa powder and sugar is fully incorporated and you have a smooth and creamy frosting.

It’s important to use the frosting straight away, onto a completely cooled cake, cupcakes, brownies or cookies and then store the sweet treat in the fridge due to the ingredients in the frosting.

This frosting makes enough for a cake, cupcakes or brownies, if you’d like to use it to sandwich and then cover a layered cake together then feel free to double the simple recipe.
