Ingredients For Pear Crumble With Oats

Ingredients for pear crumble with oats

These are the 6 ingredients you’ll need to make the comfort dessert:

Pears – I found the whole pack of juicy pears used in the recipe reduced to 25 cents because they were past their best and a bit soft. The ripe pears turned out perfectly when baked into the fall dessert.

You can use any beautiful ripe pears you’d like during pear season, including Bartlett Pears, Concorde Pears, Bosc Pears, Anjou Pears or any other local pear you can find.

Popular pear varieties such as Bartlett Pears

I’d suggest ideally including fresh pears in the pear filling, but you can feel free to used canned pears if you’re craving the comforting dessert and pears aren’t in season and easily found in grocery stores just yet.

Butter – I’ve suggested unsalted butter in the crisp recipe, but you can feel free to use salted butter or a vegan butter or dairy free butter alternative if you’d like the buttery crumble to be dairy free or vegan friendly.

You can use cold butter straight from the fridge, you don’t need to let it stand at room temperature before using, as is often the case when preparing a crumble mixture.

Oats – ideally use rolled oats in the dessert, although I have also successfully made it with finer porridge oats too.

If you want the delicious recipe to be a completely gluten-free version then be sure to use gluten free oats.

Ground Cinnamon – my warm spice of choice as a great addition to infuse the delicious pear dessert with fall flavors.

You can add in more or less of the suggested half teaspoon cinnamon, depending on how strong flavored you’d like delicious pear crisp to be.

Coconut Sugar -you can feel free to swap the coconut sugar for brown sugar, raw sugar, white sugar or any sugar or sweeteners you like, and use more or less sugar than is suggested in the easy recipe, depending on your personal preference for how sweet you like your sweet treats as well as the sweetness of your fruit.

Pure Maple Syrup – for a second element of sweet indulgence, I like to mix maple syrup through the crumble batter.

Crumble Variation Ideas

Here are ideas for more ingredients that you include in your crumble:

  • Add in chopped or flaked almonds, walnuts or crunchy pecan slices for an extra crispy topping
  • Mix through sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds or sesame seeds
  • Stir through lemon juice, lime juice or orange juice or zest
  • Add in chopped apples for an apple crumble, plums for a plum crisp, or mixed berries for mixed fruit crumbles
  • Swap the pure maple syrup for honey in the crisp topping
  • Add in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract or a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor
  • Add in warm spices such as nutmeg, mixed spice or ginger for a spiced crumble

You can enjoy a portion of the easy pear crumble on it’s own or top with pouring cream, whipped cream or ice cream for a wonderfully indulgent dessert.

Pear Crumble Recipe – Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use canned pears for pear crumble?

Yes, canned pears work well if fresh pears aren’t available, meaning you can enjoy the easy dessert all year round. Drain the pears thoroughly before adding them to the baking dish, as excess liquid can make the crumble filling watery.

Which pears are best for pear crumble?

Ripe but still slightly firm pears are the best choice for this pear crumble recipe. Bartlett, Bosc, Conference and Anjou pears all bake beautifully, becoming soft and sweet while holding their shape. If your pears are very ripe, simply reduce the baking time by a few minutes so they still hold their shape.

Do I need to peel the pears?

Peeling the pears is recommended for the softest filling, but it’s not essential. If you enjoy a little extra texture, you can leave the skins on, especially if you’re using thin-skinned varieties like Bartlett or Conference pears. Just be sure to wash them well before chopping.

Can I make pear crumble ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the pear filling and oat topping in advance. Store them separately or assemble the crumble and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. This makes it a great dessert to prepare ahead for family dinners or holiday gatherings and pop straight into the oven when needed to be able to enjoy a warm, comforting dessert.

How do I store leftover pear crumble?

Allow the pear crumble to cool completely before storing in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It will keep well for up to 4 days and can be enjoyed cold or reheated. The topping will soften slightly in the fridge but will still taste delicious.

Can pear crumble be frozen?

Yes, this easy pear crumble freezes well. Freeze it either before or after baking in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven until hot and the topping is golden and crisp again.

How do I reheat pear crumble?

The best way to reheat pear crumble is in the oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 15 minutes, which helps restore the crisp oat topping. Individual portions can also be reheated in the microwave for a quick dessert, although the topping won’t be quite as crunchy as baked in the oven.

Can I make this pear crumble dairy free?

Absolutely. Simply replace the butter with your favourite dairy-free or vegan butter alternative. The oat topping will still become golden and crisp, making it an easy dairy-free pear crumble that’s just as comforting and delicious.

Are oats gluten free?

Oats are naturally gluten free, but they are often processed in facilities that also handle wheat. If you need a completely gluten-free pear crumble, choose certified gluten-free rolled oats to avoid any risk of cross-contamination.

Can I reduce the sugar?

Yes, especially if your pears are naturally sweet and ripe. You can reduce both the coconut sugar and maple syrup or substitute with your preferred sweetener. Taste your pears first and adjust the sweetness to suit your personal preference.

What can I serve with pear crumble?

Pear crumble is delicious served warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, pouring cream or hot custard. For a lighter option, try serving it with thick Greek yogurt, which pairs beautifully with the sweet pears and cinnamon.

Can I add other fruit to this pear crumble recipe?

Definitely! Apples, blackberries, raspberries and plums all pair wonderfully with pears and work well in this recipe. Mixing fruits is a great way to use up whatever you have on hand while creating a slightly different flavour every time you bake.
