Easy Sweet Potato Mash
This really is the best easy sweet potato mash recipe – it’s creamy and loaded with flavor. It’s the perfect side dish to serve with warming comfort meals such as roasts and stews or on your holiday table as an alternative to mash with regular potatoes. (Here are 15 easy Thanksgiving side dishes.)
Sweet potato and garlic complement each other incredibly – the rich and creamy texture of sweet potato mash, especially when paired with the strong flavor of garlic is culinary perfection.
Creamy Garlic Mash Ingredients
Here are the simple ingredients you’ll need for the recipe that are all easy to find at the grocery store:
Sweet Potato – the hero of the mash is sweet potatoes which are peeled and chopped to transform into a creamy comfort dish. (You can of course swap the sweet potatoes for white potatoes or use a mix of potatoes and even carrots or parsnips for a root vegetable mash.)
Garlic – is always a must for me in mash recipes, I like to leave the cloves whole (but peeled) and then mash the cooked garlic into the mash to infuse every mouth full with fragrant garlic flavor. You can use 2 to 4 cloves (or more), depending on how strong a garlic flavor you’d like.
Salt – is my simple seasoning of choice, but you can feel free to add in extra ingredients such as pepper, parsley, fresh thyme, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, chopped green onions or any other fresh herbs or seasoning you like.
Unsalted Butter and Heavy Cream – a little butter and cream are used to enhance the flavor and add a superb creaminess to the mash. You could also mix through cheese such as parmesan cheese for a cheesy mash dish.
You can swap the rich and creamy ingredients for any butter, cream or whole milk substitute you like such as milk, sour cream, almond milk, coconut milk, dairy free or vegan butter, coconut oil or even olive oil depending on what you have in your kitchen and your dietary requirements.
This easy mashed sweet potatoes recipe makes enough for a generous portion as a healthy side for four, if you’re serving it for more, as a Thanksgiving, Christmas or holiday meal side dish, then just simply double (or triple) the recipe to satisfy a crowd.
How To Make Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Start by peeling the sweet potatoes and chopping them into small pieces. The smaller you chop the sweet potatoes, the quicker they will cook.
Place the chopped sweet potatoes into a small saucepan, along with peeled garlic cloves that are left whole.
Cover the chopped sweet potatoes and whole garlic cloves with water, and add in plenty of salt and pepper, to taste.
Bring the sweet potatoes up to the boil and then reduce to a simmer. Cook the sweet potatoes until they are soft, falling apart, tender and easily mashable, that should take 15 to 20 minutes but it depends on the size and volume of the sweet potatoes.
Once the sweet potatoes have cooked, drain off the water and pour over the butter and cream. (Or your creamy ingredients of choice.) Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy, you could use a hand mixer or stand mixer to blend the sweet potato puree into a smoother mash with a luxuriously creamy texture.
Serve the creamy mashed sweet potatoes straight away as a creamy and tasty side dish with a roast, stew or your warming, wintery, comfort meal of choice, storing any cooled leftovers in an airtight container.
