Ketogenic Diet Results – 5 Month Weight Loss Update
As I’ve say every month since the very first week – I can’t believe that the time has flown and I’ve been following the Keto Diet for FIVE MONTHS already. The time has zoomed by and I just LOVE the low-carb diet way of eating.
My 5th month saw me shed a further kilo, bringing the total to around 13 kilos/28 pounds. While the weight loss has been slower than I would have liked, I’m still thrilled to have lost weight doing something that I love.
An “aha” moment and mental health boost I had through the month happened when I was weighing my hand luggage for my upcoming trip to Japan next month. (I’m a bit of a luggage nerd!)
I filled the backpack with what I intend to travel with, weighed myself and then myself and the bag and discovered that the bag weight 9 kilos. Much less than I have lost of my own body weight so far.
But. Feeling the weight of the bag on my back helped me realise that what I have lost has taken a massive load/strain off of my body. I filled the back a little more to bring it to a total of 13kgs and then proceeded to walk around the house and really feel what that extra weight was doing to me.
My ketogenic diet results may not be as fast or as high as others, but losing 13 kilos is a big deal to me. It doesn’t matter how long it takes to get to my “goal weight”. The fact that I’m already at a WAY healthier place than I was 5 months ago is just AWESOME!
As far as exercise goes, my activity level has not really changed through my low carb high fat diet journey. I walk and keep active with my young kids but haven’t starting any new exercise regime, despite enjoying elevated energy levels as a result of spending a long time eating lower daily grams of carbohydrates.
Important Note – Be sure to consult with a Doctor, Registered Dietitian or your chosen health professional before beginning a diet like the Keto diet, to be sure that you’re in the best possible health, can try to avoid the dreaded keto flu, get the most of the health benefits and avoid any potential risk factors such as nutritional deficiencies or other health risks.
Throwing Out The Scales (sort of…)
While we’re talking about the scales, I’ve decided to challenge myself by NOT weighing myself or measuring ketone bodies for a month. After 5 months of weighing myself most days and, let’s be honest, obsessing over the number on the scale. I thought it would be healthy to NOT weigh myself for a month until the 6 month mark.
I do believe that stress can play a part in preventing weight loss, and may even impact my state of ketosis, so I want to experiment and see whether not worrying about the number on a scale every morning has an impact on my weight loss efforts.
I’m just going to stick to what’s been working for the past 5 months – limit my carb intake, especially with net carbs and keep my natural fat intake a high portion of my daily calories.
Which is easy thanks to the delicious choice of high-fat foods that are naturally low in grams of carbs I’ve enjoyed over the better part of the last year. While of course including plenty of leafy greens and other nutritious foods that make up the total carbs through my keto journey.
Before and After Pictures – Weight Loss Results
This comparison shot really highlights my journey. It’s the same dress and the differences in just 5 months are incredible! I feel like it should be a spot the difference photo, where you find 5 differences between the two photos!
Enjoying all the lovely low-carbohydrate diet meals, full of healthy fats has really paid off.
A huge milestone for me has been being able to skip the plus size department and buy “regular” sized clothing. I can’t even TELL you the last time I was able to do that. I just don’t remember! This has been my favourite buy of the month…
Overall Thoughts
I’ve never stuck with a “diet” this long before. I really don’t see it as a diet though, I could happily eat this way for months and years to come.
I just find it so easy now that I’m fully adapted and know what to eat at every meal. Healthy fats are my primary source of energy of food intake, which is having the affect of greater weight loss, without suffering personally from any adverse effects.
For me, I feel that the Keto Diet is easily sustainable in the long term, and my keto diet proponents agree with that sentiment and have lost lots of weight in the process.
