Low Carb Trail Mix - How to make a low carb, keto and sugar free

Low Carb Trail Mix

This low carb trail mix is quick and easy to put together and you can easily adapt it to meet your own dietary requirements. (And tastes!)

You can create your own trail mixes of either sweet or savory snacks – or even make your keto diet trail mix sweet and savory or salty.

You can mix the low carb diet snack together in a large bowl and then portion it out into ziploc bags for the week to help you achieve your health and weight loss goals.

Or, you can prep the trail mix into a meal prep airtight container to snack from during the week. I like these meal prep containers on Amazon.

Here are ideas for low-carb foods to include in your DIY homemade trail mix that you can combine together in a large mixing bowl or airtight container:

Favorite Keto Nuts – you can include your best nuts choosing from your own personal mix of raw nuts, roasted nuts, salty trail mix nuts or sweet nuts that have been roasted with a little stevia or monk fruit sweetener and keto friendly flavorings, such as these easy homemade cinnamon roasted almonds.

Choose from whatever heart-healthy nuts you like such as almonds, cashews, pecans, macadamia nuts, peanuts, Brazil nuts or hazelnuts to satisfy your nutty snack cravings without high carbohydrate ingredients.

Include half a cup to a cup of a variety of tree nuts for a high protein snack. You can also sprinkle over sea salt to quickly add a salty element to your keto snack mix.

Seeds – chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds make a nutritious inclusion that’s naturally high in grams of protein and low in g net carbs.

Seed options - chia seeds and sunflower seeds

Coconut – shredded, desiccated, unsweetened coconut flakes or coconut chips add in heart-healthy fats and flavor to the perfect snack.

I find that adding coconut into a keto friendly trail mix recipe adds in natural sweetness without the need for any artificial sweeteners or other sweet ingredients, while still satisfying sweet cravings.

Sweet and salty sugar free trail mix

Dark Chocolate – small amounts of cacao nibs, keto chocolate chips, sugar free chocolate chips or your favorite low carb, keto friendly chocolate can bring a sweet, chocolatey element to the delicious snack.

Just be mindful of the weather when including chocolate in your low-carb trail mix. If the healthy homemade trail mix will be enjoyed outdoors or in warm weather there’s a risk of the chocolate melting into and among the rest of the ingredients.

Chocolate options - cacao nibs, low carb chocolate and chocolate chips

Dried Fruit – this is a more contentious inclusion because dried fruit tends to be high in carbs and contain added sugar which can quickly turn nutritious snacks into high sugar, not so healthy options.

Opt for dried blueberries, goji berries or another berry to be able to enjoy the nutritional benefits of fruit while also aiming to find berries that are as low in carbs and sugars as you can find at your local grocery store of health food store.

Include only a small handful so each portion has barely a berry or two, is as low as possible in grams of sugar and will be low-carb diet approved.

How To Make A DIY Keto Trail Mix

You have a choice of a couple of different ways to prepare your homemade keto trail mix recipe, both of which are super quick and easy.

You can either mix together a handful of each ingredient for a single portion or mix together bags of ingredients for a large trail mix to pick from through the week, for movie theater snacks, travel snacks or healthy diet snacks for road trips.

I store mine at room temperature, but if you’re prepping delicate food like chocolate chips then you may want to store your homemade keto trail mix in the fridge, especially during summertime.

You’ll notice that the easy recipe for the delicious trail mix doesn’t include ingredient quantities or exact ingredients because you can really include as much of each ingredient as you’d like to enjoy as convenient snacks to meet you own preference and dietary requirements.
