Healthy Hot Chocolate Ingredients

Ingredients for hot cocoa mix

Here are the simple ingredients that you’ll need for the delicious hot chocolate recipe.

Oat Milk – creamy oat milk creates a wonderfully rich and creamy hot chocolate.

I like to measure out the milk by pouring it out into the mug I’ll be using and then pouring it out into the saucepan from there. That way there’s the perfect volume of milk for the hot chocolate.

Dairy free milk options at the grocery store

You can make your own oat milk, use a store bought chocolate oat milk for an extra chocolatey drink or oatly barista milk which is known to have a luxuriously creamy texture.

Ideally use unsweetened oat milk , so you can control the sweetness level of your hot drink yourself.

You could also use any other non-dairy milks instead of oat milk such as coconut milk, soy milk, unsweetened almond milk, cashew milk or your dairy-free milk of choice.

Adding cocoa powder

Cocoa Powder – for the chocolate element you can use your choice of high-quality cocoa powder from raw cacao powder, unsweetened cocoa powder or regular cocoa powder.

You can make a decadent dark chocolate drink by adding in more cocoa powder or use real chocolate, a chopped chocolate bar or chocolate chips. Just be sure to use dairy free or vegan chocolate chips or chocolate for a vegan hot chocolate.

Heating ingredients together

Sugar – you can use any sugar you like in your hot chocolate mix from white sugar, brown sugar or coconut sugar to real maple syrup.

You can use more or less sugar, depending on how sweet you’d like your homemade oat milk hot chocolate to be.

Flavor – you can stick to the 3 ingredients in the recipe or add in your flavor of choice from a pinch of salt or vanilla extract to enhance the flavor of the drink to adding chili or cayenne pepper to create a Mexican hot chocolate.

Toppings – you can get creative and top your mug of hot chocolate with your choice from mini marshmallows, vegan marshmallows, dairy free whipped cream, coconut cream, chocolate shavings or sprinkles.
