What To Serve With Soup

There are loads of delicious ideas for what to serve with soup to transform any of your favorite soup recipes into a hearty meal.

Some of these ideas are simple toppings that will make your hearty soup bowl go further, others are foods to serve on the side that will create a super simple budget friendly complete meal.

Any of these soup side dishes are a great way to help you consume loads of in season, fresh vegetables in a variety of different, healthy ways.

What To Serve With Soup – Easy Ideas

A while back I shared my 10 best soup recipes, which you can go to for super easy recipes to see you through winter. In today’s blog post you’ll find the best sides to enjoy with your choice of soup.

They are all perfect options whether you’re serving soup at a dinner party or as a welcome change on lazy weeknight.

Bread

Bread or garlic bread

The first option of what to serve with soup is slices of bread – that could be garlic bread, crusty bread, dinner rolls, cheesy bread, rosemary bread, a grilled cheese sandwich, vegetable panini or even to serve the soup in bread bowls.

Whichever way you choose, serving soup with bread, possibly slathered in butter like is common here in Ireland, is possibly the best way to turn soup into a meal.

Tortillas

Another carby option is to make a tortilla soup by serving bowls of soup with tortilla strips or crunchy tortilla chips.

Cheese

Crumbled blue cheese

Topping your steaming bowl of soup with cheese adds in protein and a range of different flavors, especially in the ultimate comfort dish – French onion soup.

Some of my favorite cheese options that are the perfect combination for a creamy soup are Parmesan cheese, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, blue cheese, goat cheese or feta.

Pasta

Adding pasta into any type of soup is the perfect choice to incorporate healthy carbs into your meal.

Choose from making nourishing chicken noodle soup, adding tortellini to vegetable broth (like in the above pictured tortellini soup) or really your pasta of choice to your soup bowls.

Nuts and Seeds

Nut and seed toppings

Top a creamy soup with a sprinkling of protein rich nuts and seeds. Pumpkin seeds are the perfect complement to a creamy pumpkin soup, but you could also add sunflower seeds, chopped cashew nuts, sliced almonds or your nut of choice.

Potatoes

Adding chopped potatoes into a soup adds an element of creaminess when blended and thickens a soup while making it extra hearty. A creamy potato soup is an ideal meal for cold weather days and all through soup season.

Creamy Additions

You can pour in heavy cream, sour cream, yogurt, milk or your creamy ingredient of choice to create a luxuriously creamy broth or soup that’s high in healthy fats.

Meaty Additions

Keto Chicken Soup or Chicken broth

Creating a protein rich soup is a brilliant way to turn a soup into a meal or main dish. That could be by making a tender chicken soup, adding in bacon bits, sausages or leftover roast beef.

Croutons

Crunchy croutons are always a hit with the entire family and are one of my favorite sides. You can use store bought or easily make your own.

To make your own croutons, start by chopping bread into crouton sizes pieces, then throwing them into a baking dish, drizzling over extra virgin olive oil, salt, garlic powder, oregano or your seasoning of choice, giving the croutons a good toss and then baking at 180C/350F for 10 to 15 minutes, or until golden, tossing half way through baking.

Beans

Soup with beans

Adding beans whether that’s cannelini beans, white beans, green beans, refried beans or any other bean you like to soup is the perfect addition for fiber, carbs and also healthy protein.

You can add the simple ingredients at the last minute or for a long, slow cook, just depending on the type of bean you choose.

Salad

And finally, if you’d like a simple side with your soup, go for a crisp salad such as an arugula salad, spinach salad, red potato salad, butternut squash salad or the above pictured creamy broccoli salad.
