Easy Apple Crumble With Oats

This easy apple crumble with oats is the perfect warming delicious dessert to make when apples are in season.

At the moment here in Ireland a carton of apples is as little as 50 cents – making this a wonderfully budget friendly dessert and my personal favorite way of making the most of a bounty of fresh apples.

Yes there are two sweet ingredients in this recipe – coconut or light brown sugar and maple syrup. They both work together so well to create a sweet crumble with a crunchy topping.

Note that if you’re wanting the easy recipe to be 100% gluten free, then be sure to use gluten free oats in the crunchy oat topping.

You can use your favorite apple in apple desserts like this, choose from granny smith apples, tart apples, juicy apples, red delicious apples, pink lady apples or use a combination of apples that you find at the grocery store.

How to make apple crumble thats gluten free

There are loads of ingredient variations for this great recipe. Here are some ideas for you:

  • Add in chopped or flaked nuts, seeds, almond meal or almond flour
  • Add in lemon zest, lemon juice, orange zest of orange juice
  • Add in pears, berries or any fresh fruit you like if you want a mixed fruit crumble
  • Swap the maple syrup for honey
  • Swap the butter for a dairy free butter alternative or coconut oil
  • Add in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • Add in nutmeg or ginger for a spiced crumble

Apple Crumble With Oats Recipe

  • 1.1lbs/500g Apples
  • 1.76oz/50g Unsalted Butter
  • 1 Cup Rolled Oats or Old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 Cup Coconut Sugar or Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Maple Syrup
  1. Heat oven to 350F/180C, get out a square baking dish and grease it well.
  2. Peel and chop the apples into bite sized pieces and place the sliced apples into the prepared baking dish.
  3. Melt the butter and set aside to cool while you prep the rest of the crumble topping ingredients and apple mixture.
  4. In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients for the crumble mixture of oats, cinnamon and sugar until well mixed.
  5. Add in the maple syrup and melted butter and stir until fully incorporated.
  6. Place the crumble topping on top of the prepared apple filling, covering the dish to each corner.
  7. Move the crumble dish to the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Serve generous portions as is or top the crispy crumble with cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce or a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.
