Cinnamon Sugar Baked Apple Slices Recipe

The sweet treat is the perfect way to get your apple pie fix, without the fuss or calorie density that comes from a slice of apple pie.

This is the ultimate autumn or fall recipe, while baking, the whole house smells incredible, you can’t help but feel at peace with the world when you’re enjoying a generous portion of warm cinnamon apples with a scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream.

The 4 Ingredients You’ll Need

4 Ingredients for the simple dessert

To make the easy baked apples, you only need these four healthy ingredients:

Butter – unsalted butter is called for in this recipe, you can use a dairy free alternative if you want the dessert to be dairy free instead.

Sugar – I’ve used demerara sugar in this instance, for the golden flavor that works so well with apples and cinnamon. You can feel free to swap for any added sugar or sweetener you’d like.

Cinnamon sugar dessert

Cinnamon – I’ve suggested 1 to 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon in the recipe because it really depends on the cinnamon sugar ratio you’re after and how rich in cinnamon flavor you want the dish to be.

Apples –  the best part is that you can use any fresh apples or combination of apples you’d like in the healthy baked apples dessert.

Choose from granny smith apples, fuji apples, tart apples, sweet apples such as pink lady, honeycrisp apples, green apples, honey crisp apples or really any apple varieties will be brilliant in this delicious dessert.

Sliced apples for Baked Apple Slices Recipe

You’ll need two to four whole apples, it just depends on the size of the dish you’ll be using and how many people you’d like the dessert to feed.

I aim for around a half an apple per person, so usually bake with 2 large apples for my family of four.

The best apples of your choosing can be peeled or left un-peeled, which I prefer for the color, texture as well as fiber and added nutrition that the apple peels bring to the healthy recipe. (Not to mention skipping the step and fuss of peeling apples!)

Optional Extra Ingredients

Optional extra ingredients

Here are ideas for more simple ingredients to include in your cinnamon apple slices dessert:

Lemon – add in lemon zest or lemon juice to balance the flavors.

Spices – add in a sprinkling of warm spices such as ground nutmeg, ginger or even pumpkin spice over the apple pieces.

Maple Syrup or Honey – add in or swap some of the sugar for maple syrup or honey.

Oats – sprinkle oats over the apples slices, before the dish goes into the oven for a speedy apple crisp type dessert.

You could even combine sweet and tart apples together to give the best flavor and texture.

Slice apples evenly

Uniform sliced apples help the dessert bake evenly and become perfectly tender.

Don’t overcrowd the baking dish

Keeping the apples in a mostly even layer to help caramelization, instead of overcrowding and steaming the fruit.

Adjust cinnamon to taste

Feel free to use more cinnamon for a stronger, warm spiced flavored treat.

Serve warm

These baked cinnamon apples taste best fresh from the oven while warm, caramelized and comforting.

Recipe Variations

Make it dairy free

Swap the unsalted butter for coconut oil, vegan butter or your dairy free alternative of choice.

Add oats

Sprinkle a few tablespoons of rolled oats over the apples just before baking for an apple crumble style topping. (Just make sure the oats are gluten free if you’re wanting to ensure the dessert is fully gluten free.)

Add chopped nuts

Protein rich walnuts, pecans or almonds add crunch and flavor.

Use maple syrup

Feel free to replace the sugar with maple syrup or honey for natural sweetness.
