How To Make Chia Jam With Frozen Fruit

Frozen fruit for chia seed jam

Making homemade chia seed jam is easy. You simply need to slowly soften the frozen fruit. This will take longer than using fresh fruit – especially if your freezer is like mine and freezes produce extra frozen/hard!

You don’t need to add any water or other liquid to help is soften. Just be patient and very quickly some of the fruit will start releasing liquid and becoming mashable.

Cooking chia seed jam

The bag of frozen fruit I used included redcurrants, blackcurrents, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. So, the smaller fruit dissolved into a jammy liquid a lot quicker than the larger raspberries.

Just keep a close watch and once all the fruit is softened you can take it off the heat. I like to use a potato masher to mash the berries into a softened jam.

You may prefer to allow it to cool and then blend in a food processor or blender and then strain through a sieve for an extra smooth, fine jam.

We prefer our a little more chunky and with small pieces of fruit. Once the fruit is mashed to your liking, you then stir through stevia (or your sugar/sweetener of choice) and chia seeds.

Once you’ve added the stevia, taste to be sure it’s sweet enough to your liking. Then, allow to cool to room temperature before pouring the sugar free chia jam into a jar. (Or jars.)

Store in the fridge, allow to further thicken for a few hours and then you can enjoy your chia jam on pancakes, waffles, toast or mixed through yoghurt.

Once you learn how easy it is to make homemade chia seed jam, it’s easy to get experimenting with different fruits, sweeteners and flavour combinations depending on the season, your tastes and what you already have in your kitchen.

Chia Seed Jam FAQs

Can you use frozen fruit for chia jam?

Yes, frozen fruit works perfectly and makes it easy to be able to enjoy homemade chia jam anytime you want, all year round.

Do chia seeds thicken jam?

Yes, chia seeds absorb liquid naturally and help create a jam-like texture without the need for pectin.

Can I use honey or maple syrup instead of stevia?

Yes, absolutely. Honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar or regular sugar all work well in the simple recipe.

What frozen fruit works best?

Choose from mixed berries, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and cherries, that all work beautifully.

How long does chia seed jam take to thicken?

The jam will start thickening like magic within minutes after stirring through the chia seeds, but it thickens even more after chilling in the fridge for at least a few hours.

Do I need pectin for chia jam?

No, chia seeds naturally thicken the softened fruit, so there’s no need for any added pectin.

Does chia seed jam taste like regular jam?

Chia jam tastes fruity and delicious like traditional jam, yet the texture is slightly more rustic and less smooth because it’s thickened naturally with chia seeds instead of pectin. (You could always blend for a smoother texture.)

How do you store the homemade chia jam?

Store the chia jam in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 1 week. You can also freeze portions for longer storage. Allow frozen chia jam to thaw overnight in the fridge before enjoying.

Why is my chia jam too runny?

If your jam appears too thin and runny, simply allow it to chill for a little bit longer, as chia seeds continue to work their magic absorbing liquid over time. You could also stir through an extra teaspoon or more of chia seeds, if needed.

Why is my chia jam too thick?

If your jam becomes too thick, then simply stir through a little bit of water, lemon juice or extra fruit until it reaches your desired consistency.
