Jar of homemade strawberry chia seed jam

Strawberry Chia Seed Jam

I’ve been making chia seed jam for the past couple of months. My whole family have been enjoying batch after batch and so I thought it was finally about time to let you in on the chia secret.

This truly is the best, most flavourful and easiest jam I’ve ever made. (And I’ve experimented with a few recipes over the years!) The magical chia seeds mixed with the cooked, mashed strawberries results in a thick and wonderous jam.

Best of all – you can make the simple jam with fresh or frozen berries. (Or, really, any fruit you like.) Then, it’s up to you what you choose to sweeten your jam with.

My sweetener of choice is Stevia, but you can feel free to use whatever sweetener you like. Or, if you’re not following a low carb diet use honey or maple syrup instead.

How To Make Chia Seed Jam

Making Chia Seed Jam couldn’t be simpler – all you have to do is cook the berries until they have softened and falling apart in a small saucepan.

Then, just let the berries cool and mix through the chia seeds and sweetener. Allow to cool then pop into a jar, refrigerate and enjoy within a few days. (Though it never lasts that long in our house!)

For a smooth jam you can feel free to pop the cooled jam, chia mixture into a blender. We prefer ours thick and with bits of berries so don’t blend our chia seed jam at all.

I’ve also experimented with placing all of the ingredients straight into a blender, blending until smooth and just skipping the berry heating process.

While the jam is still wonderful, I find that cooking the berries gives a much deeper flavour and is worth the teeny bit of effort to cook and cool the berries before making the jam.

How To Enjoy Chia Jam

Chia Jam can be enjoyed in place of regular jam, my kids enjoy theirs on top of sourdough toast. Here are some low carb ideas:

  • As a topping for homemade pancakes (like these low carb coconut flour pancakes)
  • Spread on homemade waffles (like this Keto Waffles)
  • Mixed through plain/natural/Greek yogurt – another lovely low carb way to enjoy the jam
  • Spread over your favourite baked treat, along with maybe a swirl or two of whipped cream
