Chocolate Panna Cotta Recipe

This chocolate panna cotta recipe needs only 4 ingredients to create a decadent dark chocolate dessert.

This recipe has been on my dessert bucket list for ages. As this is my year of desserts and I’m sharing a new dessert recipe a week, (read more here) it means I’m finally working through all the desserts I’ve always wanted to make.

Easy make ahead classic traditional Italian dessert

I really don’t know why it’s taken me this long to make a chocolate panna cotta. It’s a true chocolate indulgence treat that you can make as dark (or as sweet) as you want.

This panna cotta is an elegant in appearance, yet simple to prepare traditional Italian dessert that’s eggless and a velvety smooth mousse like sweet treat that chocolate lovers will adore.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients you'll need

There are only 4 simple ingredients in this rich dessert:

Chocolate – use good quality 70%+ dark chocolate, for a rich, dark chocolate panna cotta. For a sweeter dessert you can use milk chocolate or any other chocolate you like. You can use chocolate chips or chopped bittersweet chocolate for quick melting.

Gelatin – I’ve created the recipe using powdered gelatin.

Cream – use heavy cream, double cream, heavy whipping cream, or any cream you like to add rich, creaminess to the sweet treat.

Milk – you can use any milk you like to in the dessert to add wholesome, creamy goodness.

If you’d like the dessert to be low carb, keto and sugar free, then just be sure to use almond milk and 85%+ unsweetened chocolate.

To enhance the flavor of the easy dessert, you can add in a pinch of sea salt or half a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

You can always sweeten the panna cotta by adding stevia or your sugar or sweetener of choice, once you’ve added the gelatin. A couple of tablespoons at a time should do it, until it’s perfectly sweet to your liking.

For a chocolate orange flavored panna cotta, you can add in some orange zest, peel or juice to infuse the dessert with natural orange flavor.

To make the mousse like dessert dairy free, simply swap the dairy products of cream and milk for coconut cream and coconut milk instead, and be sure to use dairy free chocolate.

You can enjoy the dessert with just the 4 ingredients, or add on toppings such as a swirl of whipped cream, grated chocolate, chopped nuts or a handful of berries.

Chopped chocolate

The make the Classic Italian Dessert, start by breaking the chocolate into small pieces that will be easy to melt, so it’s ready for you when you’re ready for it.

How to bloom powdered gelatin

To bloom the gelatin, sprinkle gelatin in a small bowl, pour over water and stir well to ensure the gelatin dissolves, then set aside to bloom.

Heating milk and cream

Get out a small saucepan, pour in the cream and milk, then place it on the stove top over medium-high heat, and cook until it just starts to simmer.

Remove the milk and cream mixture from the stove, add the chopped chocolate and stir well until the chocolate has fully melted in the hot cream mixture.

Whisking ingredients together for chocolate panna cotta recipe

Pour the bloomed gelatin mixture over the chocolate mixture and then whisk until smooth and creamy.

Allow the panna cotta to cool to room temperature, then divide mixture into individual serving bowls, jars, custard cup or ramekins. To make the pouring easier, you can move the panna cotta to a jug and then pour it out from there.

Move the panna cotta portions to chill in the fridge for at least a few hours to thicken and set completely, then enjoy the easy, make ahead, delicate dessert by the delicious spoon full.

You can make the delicious dessert an extra special treat by topping each portion with chocolate shavings, chocolate syrup, fresh berries or ice cream.
