Frozen Blueberry Jam Recipe

This frozen blueberry jam recipe has only 3 ingredients and is quick and easy to prepare.

You don’t need to fuss with pectin or canning in hot jars, simply heat the berries, add in chia seeds and sugar, then enjoy!

The homemade jam is delicious as a topping for your favorite recipes such as a decadent cheesecake, scones, mixed through yogurt, as a topping for my coconut milk panna cotta recipe or enjoyed in a sandwich with peanut butter.

The Ingredients You’ll Need

3 Ingredients for chia seed jam

Here are the 3 simple ingredients that you’ll need for the homemade blueberry jam recipe.

Blueberries – you can use frozen blueberries in homemade jam, as I’ve done in this recipe, or fresh blueberries if the ripe fruits are in season and easy to find at your local grocery stores.

Jar from above

The benefit of frozen is that they tend to be cheaper and you can enjoy freshly made jam with crushed blueberries all year around, not just during berry season.

There’s no need to thaw the berries, just pop them straight into a pot or saucepan and get cooking.

You can of course make the simple recipe with any berries you like, although you may need to use slightly less sweetness if making a sweeter berry jam like strawberry jam.

Uses for homemade easy blueberry chia jam

Sugar – you can use regular sugar, brown sugar, stevia, honey or maple syrup in the jars of jam. You can use more or less sugar, the amount of sugar you use will depend on the sweetness of the jam you’re after.

Chia Seeds – are used to help the jam set and thicken without the need for pectin of any kind, whether that’s a natural pectin such as lemon juice, lime juice, lemon zest or another kind of added pectin.

This recipe is completely foolproof and doesn’t take a lot of time to prepare – you don’t even have to worry about the jam setting because the chia seeds that the recipe calls for will work to thicken the batch of homemade blueberry jam to the perfect texture, every time.

Frozen Blueberry Jam Recipe

  • 300g-500g/10.5oz-17.7oz Frozen Blueberries
  • 1/4 Cup of Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Chia Seeds
  1. Place the blueberries into saucepan and place on the stove top over medium heat to medium-high heat.
  2. Heat until the berries start to soften and come to a full rolling boil, stirring to prevent sticking and using the back of a spoon to help break down the blueberries.
  3. Remove from the full boil once softened, then use a potato masher to mash the blueberries to a puree. You could also use a stick blender, food processor or blender for a super smooth jam.
  4. Add the sugar to the hot jam and stir through to dissolve from the heat of the jam, then add the chia seeds to the blueberry mixture and stir until fully incorporated and submerged in the jam.
  5. Allow to cool to room temperature then pour into jam jars or an airtight container, then place jars in the fridge for a few hours to set, keep refrigerated and enjoy within a week.
