My Weight Loss Journey - 1 Year Update Of How I've Lost Weight And Kept It Off

My Weight Loss Journey

The past year I’ve been quietly working on my weight loss journey and I felt that at the 1 year milestone I’d share a long overdue update with you.

The last time I shared any sort of weight loss update with you was back in 2017 after a year of being on the Keto Diet.

A LOT has happened since then. I’ve moved from Australia to Ireland, been through all of the stress of the past tough year (or 3) and all that life throws at you.

So, a year ago I decided to slowly but surely make a change…

Healthy Lifestyle Change

Healthy lifestyle change

Rather than see the past year as a diet, I’ve viewed it as a healthy lifestyle change. I haven’t removed any foods or food groups, but rather eaten intuitively. (I found that this book about intuitive eating really helped change my frame of mind, eating habits and relationship with food for the better.)

My biggest accomplishment over the past year has been tracking my calories every single day on a tracking app on my phone.

I set a generous calorie target as a starting point at the beginning of the year and have entered every single food and drink along the way. I changed my whole view of calorie counting from being restrictive to just being accountable about everything I ate, regardless of the calorie amount.

I see the way I’ve been tracking as keeping a food diary rather than being obsessed with the exact number of calories and ensuring I have a calorie deficit at all costs.

It’s really become second nature to capture my daily calorie intake while working on my way to better health.

Some days I has fewer calories and ended up being under my calorie count, while other days I was over my calorie allocation. Either way I didn’t stress, I was just proud of myself for entering the calories either way.

Exercise program wise, I haven’t done anything drastic or seen a personal trainer, but rather made the small change of doing a simple yoga workout eat morning, which I felt has improved my overall health and helped me on my way to achieve my weight loss goals.

Important Note – please seek professional medical advice to address your general health and check things like your blood pressure and hormone levels to ensure that any dietary changes, even healthy diet changes, will keep you in good health.

Typical Day Of Meals

Breakfast Ideas

No two days have been the same over the year, but I do have a number of favorite foods and meals that regularly find their way into my diet.

So, this is what a typical day has looked like:

Breakfast – I have eggs pretty much every single day for breakfast, either fried, in a cheese and mushroom omelette or scrambled with smoked salmon. Sometimes with a slice of Irish Sourdough Bread and butter, sometimes carb free and low carb diet friendly. I usually also have a mug of homemade hot chocolate, no matter the weather.

Lunch – I work from home, as so many of us do lately, so found that I prefer to switch my meals around and have my main meal for lunch, which you may prefer to have for dinner.

Some of my favorite healthy meals are crispy oven baked chicken thighs, whole roast chicken, spaghetti bolognese, burgers or a vegetarian pasta or risotto to balance out my meaty week with vegetarian meals.

Typical Meals On My Weight Loss Journey

Dinner – My final meal of the day tends to be light, usually a slice of whatever homemade loaf I have in the fridge from banana bread, parsnip bread, chocolate chip bread or raisin bread and a serve of yogurt which I find to be the best way to complete my meals for the day.

Snacks and Desserts – Mid morning I tend to snack on a banana and in the afternoon will indulge my sweet tooth with either a row of chocolate, ice cream or homemade dessert.

My diet consists of mostly healthy food, with a little bit of what’s termed as junk food but I prefer to see as “sometimes food” rather than vilifying one food over the other and having so called good foods or bad foods.

1 Year Weight Loss Results

Weight Loss Results - One Year Update

So, after the last year of calorie counting and eating all the food how much weight have I lost? The good news is that the number on the scale tells me that it’s 25.2 kgs or 55.55 pounds. That equates to a healthy half a kilo or a pound of steady weight loss a week.

I’m thrilled with that result, especially that I haven’t restricted myself and this way of healthy eating is sustainable well into the future.

I feel that my energy levels have improved as the year has progressed as my body weight has slowly but surely decreased.

I just know that in the long run, over the next year and beyond, I need to continue with my healthy habits of being accountable and tracking my calories every single day, regardless of what the number is at the end of the day.

I don’t necessarily have a goal weight that I’m working towards, I’m simply going to keep tracking my calories in my food diary and continuing with my healthy living plan.
