Keto Yogurt Toppings + Low Carb Parfait Recipe – how to pick a Ketogenic Diet friendly yoghurt – Greek Yogurt, Coconut Yogurt, Natural Yogurt & Heavy Cream Options
I’m often asked about whether yogurt is low carb and keto diet compliant because most have high sugar and carb content.
The answer? Yes you can have yogurt on a Low Carb Keto Diet. It just takes a little bit of time to search through the options you have available to find the lowest carb option.
Yogurt is packed full of nutritional benefits, so I like to include a serving in my diet regularly.
Which Yogurt is lowest in carbs?
I’ve found Greek, Natural and Coconut Yogurts are usually the best bet. They are unflavoured and unsweetened so their carb count is as low as can be.
I find it easiest to compare per 100g, rather than serving size, as that can vary. If you’re counting your macros, then you simply weigh out the portion of yogurt that fits your macros, which is likely to be much less than the suggested serving size anyway.
As Greek, Natural or Coconut Yogurt is likely to be unsweetened, you get to add your own flavours to your own tastes. Here are heaps of Keto Yogurt Toppings ideas for you to choose from.
Keto Yogurt Flavor Inspiration
I keep a stash of flavor options in my pantry that can be mixed through yogurt. Some of my favourites are vanilla, caramel, chocolate, maple and orange.
You get to flavor your yogurt without adding any sugar or carbs.
Other flavor ideas include cinnamon, coffee or pumpkin spice.
Low Carb Chocolate Yogurt Topping
Whether it’s cacao powder, chocolate flavoring, cacao nibs or even a few squares of grated chocolate – chocolate yogurt is possible while you’re on a low carb diet.
Nuts & Seeds
Whether you’re after a crunch factor with your nut or seed of choice or the added nutrition of nut or peanut butter, nuts and seeds are yummy keto yogurt toppings.
Other ideas are flax seeds or even psyllium husks for a super fibre boost.
Creamy Goodness
To boost the fat content of your keto yogurt, mix through some cream, mascarpone or cream cheese. You could even top your creation with whipped cream.
Fruit
You could use fresh or frozen strawberries, blueberries or raspberries. All of which are the lowest carb fruits.
Why not prepare a quick compote by gently boiling berries with a little stevia, cooling and then stirring through yogurt.
Lemon or lime also makes a refreshing option, you could used the zest and/or juice.
How To Sweeten Yogurt On Keto
The low carb yogurt options are usually more sour than heavily and artificially sweetened yogurt.
So, the simple way to sweeten the yogurt is by stirring through a half a teaspoon to a teaspoon of stevia or your keto sweetener of choice.
Or, you can mix through chopped berries or even chia seed jam for natural sweetness from fruit.
