How To Start The Keto Diet

If you’re confused about how to start the keto diet and what you should be eating, then keep reading for my top tips for getting started.

I’m approaching my 1 year Keto Diet anniversary and I’ve enjoyed every meal and every day that it hardly feels like a diet at all.

Be In The Right Head Space

It may sound airy fairy – but trust me – being in the right head space is sooooooooooo important. I tried umpteen diets before the Keto Diet and the determination that I had starting out and the positive attitude I’m sure has had an impact on my results.

Be proud of yourself for wanting to make a positive change for the good of your health. See it as a lifestyle change and positive – rather than counting down the days until you can eat carbs again.

Calculate Your Macros

In the beginning, it’s handy to work out what your actual macros are, being the amount of Fat, Protein and Carbs you should consume each day.

Clean Out Your Kitchen

Get rid of the carb temptation. Don’t buy it when grocery shopping. Just don’t have it around. Have a kitchen overflowing with keto friendly foods means that when you need meals, you just put elements together easily.

Keto Friendly Foods

Keto friendly foods - lettuce, avocado, feta, sour cream, tuna and olive oil

So, what are Keto Friendly Foods. Simple really – any item which is low carb and high fat. If those ratios are the other way around, chances are you’re not looking at a keto friendly food.

When I started out, I just kept it really simple and had loads of foods like the following to hand:

  • Avocado
  • Oil – Coconut, Avocado, Extra Virgin Olive
  • Cream – single, double, thickened, whipping
  • Butter
  • Cheese/Feta
  • Sour Cream
  • Mayonnaise
  • Mushrooms
  • Cauliflower/Broccoli
  • Spinach/Lettuce
  • Cucumber
  • Eggs
  • Tuna
  • Sausages (Lowest carb & highest fat that you can find)

As you can see, I picked a couple of fats (avocado, a variety of creams and butter), a couple of low carb vegetables and some easy protein options. Then, simply mix and match at each meal.

Constructing Your Meals

Usually eggs for breakfast, cooked in heaps of butter. A salad for lunch – topped with avocado and sour cream. For dinner I go for a protein, a little more vegetables and some cheese and sour cream.

All simple and easily adaptable depending on your tastes and what’s in season where you are. Of course there are more vegetables and foods than those listed about but when you’re starting out I seriously suggest that you keep it as simple as possible.

Be Easy On Yourself

When I started out I had 2-3 vegetables with each meal. So yes, my macros wouldn’t have been 100% perfect in the beginning.

But, I felt that just removing the bread/pasta/sugar from my diet was a huge step and I would slowly work towards the “perfect” macros. (If that’s what you want!)

What About Snacks?

I found that as I became fat adapted, I wasn’t as hungry so I snacked a lot less. I now only have one snack in the afternoon usually – either strawberries and cream, 1 or 2 rows of 90% dark chocolate or a hot chocolate.
