Ingredient Notes

Bananas

The riper the better. Brown, spotty bananas provide the best sweetness and flavour.

Rolled Oats

Old-fashioned rolled oats create the nicest texture.

Quick oats can also be used, although the cookies will be softer.

For gluten-free cookies, use certified gluten-free oats.

Chocolate Chips

Milk, dark or dairy-free chocolate chips all work well.

How to Make Banana Oatmeal Cookies

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan) / 350°F.

Line a baking tray with well greased baking paper.

Step 2

Mashing banana in a large bowl

Break the banana up into a large bowl and mash until smooth and creamy.

Step 3

Adding rolled oats to make cookie dough

Stir in the rolled oats until everything is evenly combined and you have a cookie dough.

Step 4

Fold through the chocolate chips until you have a chocolate speckled cookie dough.

Step 5

Drop a tablespoon per cookie onto the prepared baking tray and flatten slightly with the back of the spoon. These cookies won’t spread much while baking.

Step 6

Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until lightly golden brown around the edges. Cook an extra few minutes if you’d prefer your cookies to be a little crisper.

Step 7

Allow to cool on the tray for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack and enjoying once at room temperature, then store cookies in an airtight container.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use quick oats?

Yes. Quick oats work well but produce a softer cookie with a finer texture.

Can I freeze banana oat cookies?

Yes. Once cooled, freeze them in an airtight container for up to three months. Defrost at room temperature before enjoying.

Why are my cookies soft?

These cookies are designed to be soft and chewy because they’re made with mashed banana instead of butter and sugar.

Can I make them vegan?

Yes. Simply use dairy-free chocolate chips, as the bananas and oats are naturally vegan.

Can I add protein powder?

Yes. Replace a small portion of the oats with your favourite protein powder. You may need an extra tablespoon or two of mashed banana if the mixture becomes too dry.

Can I make these without chocolate chips?

Absolutely. The cookies are delicious with just bananas and oats, or you can replace the chocolate chips with raisins, chopped nuts or dried fruit.
