Starting Keto Again – How to start the keto diet over again – Plan and Tips for getting back on track with the Low Carb, Ketogenic Diet Lifestyle, guide for getting back into Ketosis and easy meal ideas.
Starting Keto Again
This post will give you loads of tips and inspiration if you’re thinking about starting keto again. You may have had success with a low carb type of diet in the past and fallen off for one reason or another.
Now, you’re keen to get back on track and find success with healthy eating and a low carb ketogenic lifestyle.
Here’s my story – It was about 18 months ago that I came across the Keto Diet and decided to start following the way of life for the first time.
I stuck to it completely, without a single cheat for 8 whole months. I loved how I felt on keto and lost 17kg/37lbs.
At that point, I was about to travel around Japan and wanted to enjoy myself without thinking about food.
So, I stopped following the Keto Diet. (Here’s how I quit without putting on weight.)
I planned to get back onto it when I returned from Japan.
But, I haven’t managed to stick to it for more than a couple of days at a time since then. I still have regular Keto days, just not consistently.
How Do I Get My Keto Diet Back On Track?
Starting Keto Again after already having followed the diet in the past means starting from a point of low carb diet knowledge.
You know all the meals to make, ones you enjoy, that you’ve done it before and can do it again.
My point of view is that there’s no point in looking back and wishing I’d made other choices, in regretting the foods I chose to eat.
What’s happened has happened and rather than continue with a carb-fuelled existence, I’ve decided to focus on Keto once again
Over the past couple of months I’ve been moving from Australia to Ireland and I vowed to myself that when I find a home and get settled, I’ll re-start the Keto Diet. Well, that time has arrived and I plan to start the Keto Diet. Again.
Beyond that, I have no idea! I feel that I will be moving on and off Keto for years to come as I do enjoy how Keto makes me feel. For a few months at least.
What To Eat When Getting Back On Keto
What’s great is that I have a whole recipe index of Keto Meal inspiration that I’ve enjoyed in the past. So, it should make it really easy to get straight back to keto, cook meals I know I’ll love and never run out of meal ideas.
For example, through most of my Keto journey I enjoyed a bowl full of berries and cream for an afternoon treat, and I see that trend continuing during my next Keto season.
Plans For Starting Keto Again
My plans for starting keto again are to spend the next week shopping, prepping and cooking Keto Meals, so that I have a freezer and fridge full of low carb high-fat foods cooked in lots of different ways.
The video on this page gives you a look at a recent haul of keto diet foods from ALDI, to give you an idea of the kinds of low carb high-fat diet foods I usually shop for.
You can also take a look at my ALDI Low Carb Shopping List and Snacks List for even more inspiration.
I’ve also gone “old school” and have my trusty notebook and pen full of hand written meal ideas, that I jot down as I have them.
I want to give myself every possible chance of success by filling my kitchen with keto foods and having endless lists of meal and snack ideas too.
You can do the same by perusing my recipe index and finding keto meals that you will enjoy.
How To Get Back Into Ketosis
On getting back on keto and getting my body into a state of Ketosis (or fat burning mode) the best bet is to follow these 5 simple steps:
- Keeping under 20-25g net carbs a day
- Consuming healthy fats
- Drinking plenty of water
- Watching my electrolytes (salt, magnesium & potassium) to try to avoid keto flu symptoms
- Trying to get my body moving with some exercise
I like to use to Ketostix or Ketone Strips to measure that I’m in Keto and what I’m doing is working. The test strips are a cheap and easy way to measure ketosis. And, you can even cut the strips in half to make them go further. (Where to find Ketostix.)
Easy Low Carb Meal Ideas
Here are some easy meal ideas to help with starting back with a Low Carb Ketogenic Diet lifestyle and enjoy all kinds of keto-friendly foods:
Breakfast – eggs fried, scrambled or in an omelette with non-starchy vegetables such as avocado, spinach, mushrooms or broccoli – all cooked in butter or coconut oil makes the best way to start the day with a meal that’s low in grams of carbs.
There are also loads of keto breakfasts without eggs like a smoothie or chia pudding.
Lunch – a salad of tuna, chicken or hard boiled egg with spinach, avocado and a dressing of extra virgin olive oil and lemon or sour cream/mayo for a creamy dressing makes an easy lunch that’s low in total carbs.
Or you could make a packed lunch box like the above pictured one with corned beef, hard boiled egg and cauliflower mash. (Click through for more easy keto packed lunch ideas.)
Dinner – egg roll in a bowl, easy chicken bake, 4 ingredient broccoli casserole or corned beef. (For more inspiration, here are 15 lazy keto meals.)
Snacks – berries and cream or a hot chocolate are my quick and easy snacks or keto treats of choice to satisfy my sweet or carb cravings.
