Top 10 High Protein Foods

These Top 10 High Protein Foods are all loaded with essential amino acids and natually high in grams of protein. 

You may not be getting much protein in your diet and you’re looking for ways to add more, be that for overall health or to achieve your own personal weight loss goals. 

1. Eggs

Whole eggs are a brilliant source of complete protein. You may prefer to include only egg whites in your diet, but I’m quite happy to include the yolk of a large egg as well for it’s health benefits. 

A great way to enjoy a breakfast or breakfast for dinner that’s naturally high in protein content is to have eggs – any way you’d like to. Or, make a breakfast fry up like the above pictured green shakshuka, scrambled eggs or an omelette that’s loaded with other high protein ingredients to enjoy for your morning meal.

You may also want make a pot of hard-boiled eggs over the weekend to enjoy as a grab and go snack option for through the week. 

2. Cheese

There’s always a tasty selection of cheeses in my fridge to enjoy as a snack, as a high protein side with a meal or in a cheesy casserole or bake.

Some of my favorite cheeses that I keep in the fridge to ensure that I’m getting enough protein in my diet includes cottage cheese, Parmesan cheese, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, Emmental cheese and mozzarella cheese. 

3. Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are loaded with essential nutrients and include a generous amount of protein in every bite sized portion, making them a great addition to your daily protein intake. They also make a brilliant plant-based protein option to include as part of a balanced diet. 

Some of our favorites include cashew nuts, macadamia nuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and chia seeds. 

4. Peanut Butter

Creamy Peanut Butter and other nut butters such as almond butter or cashew butter can be enjoyed by the indulgent spoon full or you can buy those portion controlled pouches to enjoy on the go. (Find peanut butter on Amazon.)

Peanut butter makes an excellent sandwich filler for your favorite bread, wrap or bagel. Or, sandwich a couple of rows of dark chocolate together with peanut butter for an instant high protein sweet snack. My favorite way to enjoy peanut butter is in my 3 ingredient fudge that’s easy to make, full of healthy fats and a delight to enjoy.

5. Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt makes a good source of protein that can be enjoyed in a multitude of ways, such as a simple breakfast or snack.

Or, you could mix a portion of yogurt such as low-fat Greek yogurt into a healthy homemade chia seed pudding to create a dish that has a naturally high protein content. 

6. Beans and Lentils

Excellent plant bases options that have elevated protein levels while being naturally plant based are beans and lentils. You don’t have to be following a vegan diet or vegetarian diets to be able to enjoy the many health benefits of the ingredients. 

Some of my favorites include black beans, red lentils, green lentils, white beans and baked beans that are some of the best high protein foods that are loaded with important nutrients. 

7. Fish and Seafood

Fish and seafood including fatty fish or oily fish such as salmon, sardines or tuna are brilliant animal sources of protein.

Enjoy a speedy tuna salad or grab a ready to go high protein tuna pouch or meal for a flavorful, healthy savory snack option. Just be sure to read the ingredient list carefully for any processed product to be sure you’re happy to consume the ingredients included in the product and that it fits your macros.

We also love tuna noodle casserole and cheesy tuna cauliflower casserole as high protein comfort food meals, cooked in healthy ways.

8. Meat

There are plenty of ways to enjoy the pure protein of red meat as part of a high-protein diet.  You may prefer to include lean beef, lean meat or fatty meat, depending on your own personal tastes, budget and dietary requirements. 

You can pick up already cooked deli meat from the supermarket to snack on or include as part of a meal. Or, cook up an easy, hearty, budget friendly meal with lean ground beef, like the above pictured egg roll in a bowl which is always a huge hit with the whole family. 

9. Chicken

Depending on your tastes, budget and dietary requirements, you can enjoy a protein rich meal that includes chicken breast, thighs, legs or a whole chicken.

Our favorites include Tuscan chicken, chicken soup with drumsticks, cheesy chicken bake, yogurt roasted chicken and the above pictured crispy oven baked chicken thighs.

10. Protein Powder

Find a protein powder that meets your budget and dietary requirements so that you can quickly throw together protein shakes, or blend protein powders into a grab and go smoothie, shake or mixed into yogurt for a speedy meal or snack. (Find protein powder on Amazon.)

You can choose a whey protein powder or, if you’re avoiding animal proteins, opt for a vegan friendly protein powder instead.
